Type Locality and Naming

Metangula Basin (Mozambique). A formal lithostratigraphic unit recognized within the Karoo-aged Metangula Basin, which straddles the border between Mozambique and Tanzania. Lower formation in Beaufort Gr in Metangula Basin (Mozambique)

Lithology and Thickness

Composed of a terrestrial clastic sequence, representing the lower stratigraphic interval of the basin's sedimentary fill.

Coarse-grained sandstone


Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Rests above the basal pre-Karoo basement or alongside the Monte Lilonga Fm.

Upper contact

Underlies the Congresso Fm

Regional extent

Geographically restricted to the Metangula Basin in northern Mozambique. Correlates with the lower Karoo glacial and post-glacial transition units (such as the Dwyka Gr equivalents or lower Ecca units) within the eastern African rift basins.
